Plant porn Phriday: vulgaris!

Meet Dracunculus vulgaris, definitely one of the weirdest-looking plants I’ve ever laid eyes on. It does look like it’s wearing a big purple cape! This bizarre picture comes from my recently/happily-reconnected junior high friend Shanel Paris, who has the coolest name ever. (These are the times that I really love Facebook…)

Shanel snapped this bodacious bloom growing behind the Bastyr Center for Natural Health in Seattle (teaching clinic of the renowned Bastyr University), where she works as a phlebotomist. (Yeah, there’s some irony that a woman who works with blood found a plant with such a vampiric name.)

It caught her eye and nose with its unique presence and aura. Yep, this tall dark stranger smells like rotting flesh. Putrid!

I read online Dranunculus is also called Voodoo Lily and Stink Lily. Go figure. The smell is designed to attract flies for pollination.

The long, uh, thing in the middle is called a spadix. Saucy!

Happy Friday, everybody! And Labor Day weekend…. ahhhhh.
